Video recordings of wolves in Carinthia have appeared repeatedly in recent months. Now a vacationer has the video proof: there are offspring!
A video recently circulated on social media showing five wolf puppies. A German holidaymaker is said to have captured the scenes with a camera almost two weeks ago in the Upper Drautal near the Hochstadel. But the holidaymaker and members of the Unholde farming community in the Oberdrauburg municipality do not want the recordings published.
The “Krone” has the video. Through a spotting scope or binoculars, five canine animals were filmed frolicking on a mountain ridge. As a layman, however, it is difficult to determine whether these are actually young wolves. But the suspicion is clear, as wolves have been sighted again and again in this area.
Expert confirms the authenticity of the recordings
Roman Kirnbauer, the state’s wolf expert, also confirmed the authenticity of the recordings. After consultation with the local hunters, it is actually the Drautal. The “Krone” spoke to Johann Krieghofer, president of the affected farming community: “Out of 44 sheep, the landlord counted only 15. The other animals are so afraid of the wolves that they have already fled at an altitude of 2700 meters. They are probably impossible to catch because they are so shy.”
“A disaster for alpine agriculture”
The remaining cows and sheep are now being driven out. “There are already seven to eight confirmed sheep deaths in this area that were attributable to the wolf. It’s a disaster for us,” Krieghofer said. Politicians have to decide whether they want to protect wolves or alpine agriculture. “You also have to take into account that the boys will be adults in a year. A cow can ward off a single wolf. Certainly not a pack !”
