Even the day after the insane act in the quiet Naarn im Machfeld, there is enormous consternation throughout the country. An experienced dog trainer offers three possible reasons for the American Staffordshire Terrier’s fatal attack. The animal owner is threatened with legal action.
“In my 18-year coaching career, I have never experienced anything like this. That is unbelievable.” Sascha Steiner, who has been training problem dogs for years, is also shocked after the fatal bite attack on a jogger. “The American Staffordshire Terrier is one of the most beautiful breeds. The fact that they attack people is absolutely uncharacteristic. This is actually a dog that you can’t even use as a guard dog.”
Race is seen as potentially dangerous elsewhere
However, in other states, such as Vienna, the breed is one of the so-called listed dogs due to its danger potential, for which a dog license is required. One thing is indisputable: American Staffordshire Terriers have a great bite force. But how could the four-legged friend in Naarn with his strength end up in such a fatal bloodlust?
Breeding, training or health as reasons
According to the 47-year-old dog professional from Weißkirchen, there are three possible reasons for this: “It could be that he was raised incorrectly by the dog owner.” According to Steiner, the fatal mistake could have happened earlier, namely in breeding: “If the wrong bloodlines are crossed, aggression can arise.” Ultimately, a health cause in the dog cannot be ruled out, such as a brain tumor or pain caused by the animal’s attack.
“Every third aggression has a health-related background,” says Steiner. During the attack itself, the terrier must have bitten itself in a frenzy: “He’s biting, he’s in a blood frenzy,” said the dog trainer. The consequences for the American Stafford are already clear: he was euthanized. The owner faces legal consequences.
The legal consequences for the dog owner
“It is a murder,” said Alois Birklbauer, a criminal law expert at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz. “Depending on the circumstances, there is likely to be negligent homicide or gross negligence,” Birklbauer said. This is also the basis for many of the charges in fatal traffic accidents. The maximum penalties for this are one or three years in prison. However, it will take some time before any procedure can take place; the research is just beginning.
