According to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the Russian invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago heralded a new, warlike era in Europe. What worries him most right now is that literally any scenario is possible.
“I know it sounds devastating, especially for the younger generation, but we have to get used to the fact that a new era has begun: the pre-war period. I am not exaggerating; “That is becoming clearer every day,” he told “Welt” and European partner media.
“I don’t want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept of the past,” Tusk said. “It’s real, and it started over two years ago.”
“We have not experienced a situation like this since 1945.” That year, World War II ended with the surrender of Hitler’s Germany.
At the same time, Tusk said he observed a revolution in the European mentality. No one doubts anymore that we must defend ourselves together. “Look at Germany, a huge change has taken place there. Today, the CDU and the SPD are competing to see which of them is more pro-Ukrainian.”
“Wanting us to deny our values”
In view of Russia’s instrumentalization of migrants, he called for more consistent protection of the EU’s external borders. “The European Union as a whole, as a powerful organization, must be mentally prepared to fight for the security of our borders and our territories.” About the rejection of migrants right at the border, he said: “No one can control each person individually or Russia and Belarus send thousands of people to the border at the same time.
They do this deliberately and cold-bloodedly. If we can handle a thousand people, they will send ten thousand and so on.” The goal of the governments in Russia and Belarus is destabilization. “They want us to reach a point where we have to deny our own rights and values.” It is now important to act as humanly as possible.
