Tens of thousands of believers usually flock to Jerusalem during the holidays. This year it is different: the country is at war. Palm Sunday the week before was somehow joyful, a sign of life for the small Christian minority here. A very personal report from ORF Israel correspondent Tim Cupal.
Last Palm Sunday: The sun continued to flash through the clouds. Then the golden dome of the Dome of the Rock lights up briefly. A sea of green palm leaves waves over the worshipers as they zigzag from the Mount of Olives through narrow streets down to the Lion’s Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem. Maybe this time there will be a thousand. Not as little as feared, but much less than in previous years. “An Easter with the handbrake on,” says Abbot Nicodemus Schnabel of the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion.
