Accident in Baltimore – Large piece of debris recovered after bridge collapse

Date:

After a four-lane highway bridge collapsed in the American city of Baltimore, emergency services have started salvaging the first parts of the bridge. A piece weighing 200 tons was removed Sunday (local time) from the debris field that has blocked access to the Port of Baltimore since the accident, ABC News reported, citing authorities.

Last week, a container ship rammed a support pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the 1.5-mile-long highway bridge to collapse. Several people were killed.

Tons of steel need to be salvaged
Since then, the steel framework has blocked passage from the port of the economic center. The ship “Dali” is also still at the site of the accident. First, a temporary canal will be constructed to allow additional boats to reach the accident site for rescue and clean-up operations.

Tons of additional steel and concrete debris still need to be removed, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told the station. “We are talking about huge parts here.” The “Dali” alone contains 3,000 to 4,000 tons of steel.

Temporary alternative channel
How long it will take before access to the economically important port of Baltimore is restored is unclear, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told CBS News. As Baltimore Harbor Captain David O’Connell announced Sunday, a temporary alternate channel will be established “for commercially important vessels.”
