Gusts of wind have been causing unrest in Austria since the weekend. On Monday morning, the situation continued to deteriorate in large parts of the country: in Carinthia, Styria and Salzburg, fallen trees caused traffic disruptions. The Carinthian State Disaster Management Agency has even called on people in the Klagenfurt-Land and Völkermarkt districts to stay indoors due to the heavy storm.
According to civil protection, trips that are not urgently necessary should also be avoided. On Monday afternoon, the Karawanks in Carinthia were particularly affected by strong winds, and in Styria the northern regions were affected. Damage to buildings and roof structures was already making the rounds on social networks around noon.
Thousands of Styrians without electricity
In Styria, approximately 170 transformer stations were not in operation due to damage to power lines. About 4,000 households were affected. The ÖBB was able to make several train routes in Upper Styria unusable, at least temporarily, due to fallen trees. Replacement rail services were set up.
In Salzburg, a tree snapped by strong winds fell on Loferer Straße (B178) near Unken (Pinzgau) on Monday morning and hit a moving car. The 65-year-old driver and her 69-year-old passenger were injured, but were able to get out of the badly deformed car themselves, state police headquarters said. They were taken to hospital.
During the cleaning work, stones came loose above the road. Although the falling debris was captured by the slope safety net, the B178 was completely closed for approximately two hours due to the existing hazard.
