Explosive Investigation – So yes: the Kremlin is behind a microwave attack

Date:

International research has revealed a new approach to the so-called Havana syndrome: according to this study, microwave weapons from the Russian military intelligence service GRU could be responsible for stabbing headaches and other symptoms. For a long time, the American secret services did not believe there was a trail abroad.

The “Havana syndrome” is a summary of puzzling symptoms such as headaches, hearing loss, dizziness and nausea, which US diplomats and their relatives living in the Cuban capital Havana have complained about since 2016. Those affected said that the symptoms started after they heard a strange noise or felt a strong pressure in their head. Later, similar things were reported from other places around the world, including Vienna.

‘Patient Zero’ probably not in Havana, but in the heart of Europe
The new theory was put forward by “Spiegel”, “The Insider” and “60 Minutes”. According to the research, the phenomenon is older than previously known: the first cases are said to have occurred in 2014 in the German financial metropolis Frankfurt. According to one affected person, these were ignored by the US government.

Mysterious GRU unit 29155
According to a report by Spiegel, the Russian military intelligence service GRU could be behind the attacks. According to travel and telephone records, members of the GRU unit codenamed 29155 were on the scene during many of the attacks that resulted in the “Havana Syndrome,” according to the investigation team’s findings. In particular, electromagnetic or acoustic weapons could have been used.

Russian agents also had Vienna on their escape plan
According to the report, Vienna also figured in the officers’ flight plans. US media reported cases of “Havana syndrome” in the US embassy in Vienna in mid-2021. The federal capital is considered a hub for secret service activities, as well as informal exchanges.

Russia: “Baseless accusations”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the reports on Monday. The issue is not new and there have been accusations against Russia from the beginning, Peskov said, according to Reuters. No one has yet published convincing evidence for these ‘unfounded accusations’.

Last year, the US secret services did not believe there was any trace of Russia
A US intelligence investigation, whose findings became public in the spring of last year, concluded that it was “highly unlikely” that a “foreign enemy” was responsible for the complaints to the diplomats. However, there is still no plausible explanation for the cases, American media said at the time.
