An animal lover discovered a dead swan near the Neue Donau lock bridge. He was killed during breeding. Advertisement!
Horrible case of animal cruelty in the Danube city. A dead swan was found a few days ago at the Neue Donau lock bridge. Marina Gruber remembers: “I drive this way every day – I know the nests. Even from a distance I could tell something was wrong. So I climbed down the dike to the nest.” Here the animal rights activist was confronted with a horrible scene. Gruber: “The swan’s skull was smashed. The eggs were crushed. It wasn’t another animal!”
Autopsy confirms murder
This is also confirmed by the AGES autopsy. A report has now been filed. The Association Against Animal Factories also became involved. “We hope for support from the public. The whole thing must have happened on the night of March 23,” said a spokeswoman.
Up to ten animals disappear every year
Gruber expects concrete information from possible videos: “The lock is equipped with cameras. Maybe the police can assess this.” The animal rights activists also assume that it is a serial perpetrator. Marina Gruber: “Every year, about ten swans are killed or disappear without a trace in Vienna. Sometimes animals are kidnapped in cars. I’ve seen that myself. The animals will probably end up as roast meat. It’s hard to believe.”
Video surveillance of nests
And the animal rights activists are now taking action themselves and even have some nests monitored with cameras. “Human hatred is becoming increasingly absurd and these poor animals need our protection.” The perpetrator can risk severe penalties of up to 7,500 euros.
