The Palestinians have resumed the process for full membership of the United Nations. You have had observer status for more than ten years. President Mahmoud Abbas applied for membership in 2011.
They were given observer status by adopting a resolution (in November 2012). The Charter of the United Nations stipulates that a two-thirds majority is required for the admission of a state. The Security Council must also make a recommendation in advance. Observers doubt this will happen and point to the veto of the US, Israel’s closest ally.
Countries such as Austria and Germany also do not recognize Palestine as a separate state, because such a state must first be agreed with Israel. Nevertheless, Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour has now asked to review the 2011 request this month.
Arab League supports proposal
Support comes from the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement. They pointed out that 140 member states had “already recognized the State of Palestine.”
