Hot debate: should the Styrians directly elect their local leaders?

Date:

In six states, the population directly elects their mayors. There were recently exciting second elections in Salzburg. Could a change in the electoral system towards direct election of local leaders also be conceivable in Styria? We asked the Styrian party leaders.

Many Styrians were also enthusiastic about the second election in Salzburg between SPÖ man Bernhard Auinger and KPÖ hero Kay-Michael Dankl, especially the communist faction in Graz. As is known, Auinger ultimately won the race. In the state capital, Elke Kahr was spared a direct ‘show of strength’ with Siegfried Nagl (ÖVP) in 2021: after winning the municipal elections, she was elected mayor (according to the Styrian voting law) in the municipal council with the votes of the KPÖ , the Greens and the SPÖ.
