The consumption of schnitzels is high: Austrians eat almost 60 kilos of meat per year

Date:

Mr and Mrs Austrians eat too many schnitzels and generally too much meat, as much as 58.6 kilograms per person per year! The annual recommended consumption amount is consumed no later than April 7.

We eat too much meat – and have been eating the recommended amount all year. On April 7, “Four Paws” drew attention to the accompanying “Meat Exhaustion Day”.

In Germany it doesn’t happen until April 21, in Switzerland on May 6.

The basis for the calculation is the so-called “Planetary Health Diet”, a scientifically based menu developed by the EAT-Lancet Commission. This takes into account the effects of nutrition on both the climate and human health.

“Every year, as many as 83.3 billion farm animals are slaughtered worldwide. Industrial livestock farming is the second largest source of CO₂ emissions,” says campaign leader Veronika Weissenböck.

Meat consumption in Austria is 58.6 kilograms per capita
Overall, meat consumption in this country is 58.6 kilograms per capita per year, almost twice as high as the average global consumption (33 kilograms).

Each person eats 1.13 kilos per week, which is more than seven schnitzels per week. The recommended amount of 301 grams per week corresponds to a maximum of two schnitzels.

Pork tops the popularity rankings
Austrians prefer to eat pork, no less than 33.5 kilos per person per year. The most popular is ham, followed by extra sausage, Frankfurter, Knackwurst and Leberkäse. Roasted ham, bacon and salami are also very popular.

Specifically, consumers purchased 11,220 tons of ham and approximately 5,000 tons of roasted ham in food stores in 2023.
