The Berlin band Die Ärzte has now called on people to vote in the European elections. You released the song ‘Democracy’, a paean to personal responsibility. “You are essential, without you it doesn’t work,” it says.
A note about your own options is included. “If you’re wondering how to make the world a better place, how about voting? Your cross against swastikas, that’s where it starts.’ Another message appears at the end of the video. “Voting is the highest privilege in a democracy. If you refrain from doing so, you may soon no longer be able to vote.”
“Everyone shouts, everyone is right”
“We actually live in a democratic state that is firmly founded on its fundamental order and yet democracy seems to be a particularly important asset to protect more than usual,” said drummer Bela B (61) at the release of the new song. Germany is starting to look more and more like the US, says guitarist Farin Urlaub (60). “Everyone is shouting, no one is listening anymore; Everyone is right, it is always someone else who makes mistakes; and compromise is already considered a defeat.”
Numerous clips from the band are quoted in the AI-based video, including “Scream for Love.” Released in 1994, the song is considered an anthem against right-wing extremism and is repeatedly celebrated during the punk rock band’s concerts.
Have been dedicated for years
The band members have been politically and socially active for years. In the video you see an avatar of Farin Urlaub in the German Bundestag. “We act politically as a band because neutrality is not an option these days. Personally, I would be extremely unsuitable as a real politician, simply due to a lack of any competence,” Urlaub said.
“Our opinions, our comments are read differently and perhaps more honestly for many people than those of many politicians,” says Bela B. But unlike politicians, you don’t have to make compromises.
