Different rules for displaced persons without Ukrainian citizenship
The reason seems incomprehensible: at the beginning of the war, his niece and her parents fled from Ukraine to Salzburg with the help of Andreas. For days the “Krone” readers cheered until Andreas could finally hug his loved ones. Now the authorities are targeting the family. They even received the first fines for illegal entry. The problem: Because the trio has Turkmen nationality, different rules apply than for Ukrainian displaced persons. Returning to the Turkmenistan dictatorship is not an option for the family, which spent many years working and studying in Ukraine, for several reasons.
In order to stay in Austria, the family must now prove that their daughter Lejla, Andreas’ niece, is entitled to Ukrainian citizenship. Numerous attempts to do this with the help of embassies, consulates or intermediaries failed due to the war. Andreas Tredak sees only one option: “I’m going to Kiev and hope I come back unharmed and with the right confirmation.” He is not afraid, says Tredak. He only hopes that his wife in Hof will not be too exhausted in the coming days alone with the children…
