Lithuania will provide Ukraine with further military assistance to defend itself against Russia’s war of aggression. After meeting with her Ukrainian counterpart Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte announced the upcoming purchase and delivery of about 3,000 drones for the attacked country.
The unmanned aircraft, with a total value of around 20 million euros, is expected to reach the front at the end of this year, Simonyte said in Vilnius on Friday.
Rehabilitation program for wounded soldiers
The Baltic EU and NATO country will also start developing a rehabilitation program for injured Ukrainian soldiers. According to Simonyte, the government in Vilnius wants to release a maximum of 15 million euros for this.
Lithuania’s prime minister also did not rule out the possibility of her country sending soldiers for training in the country attacked by Russia. Noting that military instructors were already teaching Ukrainian troops in Lithuania and elsewhere, Simonyte said: “Could they be trained in Ukraine? With adequate air defense it is certainly possible to manage these risks.”
Most determined supporter of Ukraine
Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for more than two years and is largely dependent on Western support for military equipment. Lithuania is one of Ukraine’s most determined supporters internationally.
According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, the Baltic state has supported Ukraine with aid worth about 1.5 percent of economic output since the start of Russia’s war of aggression in February 2022. “We really appreciate it,” he said.
