Two men from Ukraine are said to have raped a young woman in a hotel in Vienna on the night of January 16, 2022 – a few weeks before the Russian attack on their homeland. The 36 and 34-year-old men were expected to appear before a regional court jury on Tuesday. However, the hearing had to be postponed – the younger of the two received a draft notice for the Ukrainian army.
Second defendant ill
The 34-year-old is ‘at war’, as his lawyer explained to a jury (chaired by Eva Brandstetter). “Do you know where it is? The front part?” the judge wanted to know. The lawyer said no. When asked if she knew how long her client would have to serve, the lawyer replied: “That is not foreseeable.”
The elderly defendant was absent due to illness, his legal representative confirmed this. That’s why it was initially postponed until mid-May. It is unclear whether negotiations can then take place – even if only against the 36-year-old.
Raped in a hotel
The two men are accused of approaching their would-be victim on the street and identifying themselves as Ukrainian tourists. They talked to the woman, invited her to their hotel and suggested moving the conversation to her room. There, one of the two allegedly raped the woman after the other pushed her to the ground and restrained her.
