Column of smoke meters high – major fire in a former bread factory in Schwechat

Date:

On Sunday evening, a fire broke out on the site of the former Hammerbrotwerke in Schwechat. The emergency services were alerted around 2 a.m. Several fire brigades spent hours battling the flames.

The fire was only under control shortly before 9 a.m. on Sunday, the Bruck an der Leitha district fire command reported on Facebook. According to a fire brigade spokesperson, there was a fire in the business premises just over a year ago.

This time, the immediately adjacent, vacant building of the part of the factory that was burning at the time caught fire for an as yet unknown cause, according to the FF Schwechat.

Support from Vienna
In addition to several volunteer fire brigades from the Bruck an der Leitha district, support came from the federal capital to fight the fire. The Viennese professional fire brigade was present with six vehicles.

The experience of the fire in the former bread factory in March 2023 has helped with the current operation, according to the FF Schwechat. All forces were bundled and logistics divided at the entrance. In addition, additional troops – including the Ebergassing fire brigade and the Schwechat brewery fire brigade – were warned about the approximately 600 meter long supply line from the Schwechat river.

Roof skin opened
Based on the experiences, the fire could be prevented from spreading further. Using an aerial rescue vehicle and two turntable ladder vehicles, the roof skin was opened to conduct a targeted firefighting operation using foaming agent.

The fire was extinguished after about eight hours. A total of six fire brigades with 144 men were present.
