Sad result of a search in Wängle in Ausserfern, Tyrol: The crew of a police helicopter was only able to rescue a missing German alpinist (43) on Sunday. The man may have fallen more than 150 meters on the Schneidspitze on Saturday.
Around 10:10 am on Saturday morning, the hiker sent his family a video message explaining that he had to stop just below the summit due to the prevailing conditions on the Schneidspitze. When he still had not returned to Germany that evening, his relatives reported him missing to the German police.
They informed their Tyrolean colleagues on Sunday, who then found the missing person’s car in the parking lot of the Höfen mountain railway. As a result, the Libelle police helicopter took off shortly afterwards for a search flight.
There are indications that there was a crash
After a short time there was a sad certainty: the crew discovered the German’s body in the steep terrain on the eastern slope of the Schneidspitze, just below the summit. Based on the evidence, police believe the 43-year-old slipped on a steep snowfield and fell approximately 500 feet.
