A twelve-year-old boy and an unknown friend went on a rampage in Feldkirchen’s Liebfrauenkirche on Saturday morning: on the one hand they acted together as arsonists, and on the other hand they tried to be thieves.
Shortly before 11:30 a.m., the two boys entered the church. The first thing they did was search the donation boxes set up – and unlocked – at the shelter for cash. Then, using a lighter, they set fire to the cloth covering the altar in three places. They then set fire to two unspecified objects directly behind the altar. The flames immediately spread to the carpet and then damaged a wooden structure underneath.
Fortunately, a churchgoer noticed the fire and immediately alerted the fire brigade. The Floriani disciples quickly got the fire under control and then ventilated the church. The material damage is considerable, probably amounting to around 20,000 euros. It could have been much worse: irretrievable artifacts and relics were also kept on the altar table – and according to police their value is in the five-figure range.
The police have already identified one of the two perpetrators, a twelve-year-old boy, but his ‘partner in crime’ has not yet been positively identified.
