On January 1, 2025, around 9.2 million people lived in Austria. The light population growth of 0.4 percent is due to immigration. The birth assessment was negative for the fifth year in a row.
In the previous year, 11,248 people died more than born. At the same time, more people moved to Austria than migrating abroad. The birth balance was only positive in Vienna (plus 2153), Vorarlberg (277) and Tyrol (108). The fertility rate was 1.31 children per woman in 2024 and therefore reached a new low point.
In federal capital there was the strongest population growth (plus 1.1 percent) in the previous year, Carinthia registered the lowest increase (plus 0.1 percent). In 2024, fewer people lived in Burgenland than in 2023 (minus 0.1 percent).

Every fifth person from abroad
According to Statistics Austria, immigrants are mainly (68 percent) consisting of third -country nationals. They mainly came from Syria, Ukraine and China. Almost every third person (32 percent) has emigrated from an EU or EFTA state or the United Kingdom. Germany, Hungary and Croatia lead the statistics here.
The share of foreign citizens in the total population rose from 19.7 percent to 20.2 percent. Vienna has the highest part with 36.4 percent, Burgenland the lowest.
The life expectancy at birth was on average 79.8 years for men, 84.3 for women, that is a slightly plus. The higher life expectancy was registered in the western regions last year.
