Crime 30 years ago – sons drowned: parole denied for mother

Date:

A mother who drowned her two sons thirty years ago is hoping for early release in the US state of South Carolina. However, the court refused to release the child murderer.

The horror act made headlines far beyond the borders of the US thirty years ago. Susan Smith strapped her two sons into the car and caused the vehicle to roll into a lake. The three-year-old boy and his one-year-old brother drowned helplessly in the vehicle.

“Would give anything to change it”
“I know what I did was terrible,” she told the committee that would decide her parole. “And I would give anything to change that.” However, her regret did nothing for the now 53-year-old: the decision was made against her release.

The children’s father also demanded that Smith remain behind bars. 30 years in prison is not enough for this terrible crime. “That’s only fifteen years per child, their own children,” David Smith argued. “That’s just not enough.”

Prosecutor spoke of a “terrible decision”
The prosecutor also opposed release: Smith killed Michael and Alex after her lover told her that her sons were the reason the couple had no future together. Smith made a “terrible, terrible decision by choosing a man over her family,” Tommy Pope said. “Susan always focused on Susan,” the prosecutor summarized.
