Soldiers injured – military vehicle rolls over after crash on A1 in Lower Austria

On Sunday evening, a serious traffic accident involving a military vehicle on the western highway caused a kilometer-long traffic jam. The two injured passengers were transported to hospital.

For reasons that are still unclear, an armored military vehicle crashed into a guardrail and fell over on the A1 towards Vienna on Sunday evening. At the time of the accident, two soldiers were in the military police vehicle, which is used for transport, patrol, command and reconnaissance purposes.

Soldier seriously injured
One of the two passengers was seriously injured in the accident, the other was only slightly injured. According to initial information, the latter was able to climb through the roof hatch under his own power. He was also able to free his comrade from the vehicle via the roof hatch and provided first aid until the rescue services arrived.

The two soldiers were transported to a hospital. It is still unclear why the military vehicle crashed into the guardrail. The exact cause will be the subject of a military investigation, it is said.

The alerted fire brigades supported the rescue service and then worked together with the military police to rescue the accident vehicle. The accident caused a kilometer-long traffic jam on the Westautobahn towards Vienna, with two lanes closed. Drivers had to plan about 20 minutes more travel time.
