Dispute over islands – Athens informs UN about conflict with Turkey

Date:

The Greek government wants to file a complaint with the UN that Turkey is questioning the sovereignty rights of several Greek islands in the eastern Aegean Sea. A corresponding letter will be handed over to UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday evening, the state broadcaster (ERT) reported Thursday, citing the Athens Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Affected islands include popular holiday islands such as Samos and Rhodes.

The situation between neighboring countries and NATO members has been extremely tense for weeks. Turkish fighter jets currently fly almost daily over inhabited Greek islands. Ankara argues that Greece is losing its sovereign rights over several islands off the coast of Turkey because they are militarized.

right to self-defense
This is not in accordance with the Treaties of Lausanne (1923) and Paris (1947). Athens, on the other hand, justifies the militarization with the threat posed by numerous landing craft stationed on the west coast of Turkey and the right of each state to self-defense.

“No longer exists for me”
The dispute over the islands is just one of many conflicts between the neighbors. It was only at the beginning of the week that Erdogan publicly cut contact with Mitsotakis – he no longer exists, the Turkish president said. The background is the current close cooperation between the Greeks and the US, which maintain a number of military bases in Greece.

In a recent speech to the US Congress, Mitsotakis warned the United States not to sell F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, which Ankara took very seriously. Ankara and Athens also disagree about the natural gas reserves in the sea.
