Ski binding came loose – mountain guide (65) falls 200 meters on Wildspitze

Date:

An alpine accident occurred on the Wildspitze in Tyrol’s Ötztal on Sunday in which a 65-year-old mountain guide from Germany was injured. The man’s ski bindings suddenly opened, causing the alpinist to fall about 150 to 200 meters into the depths.

The German from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district led three ski tourers to the Wildspitze on Sunday morning. Descending from the summit, the group reached the Mitterkarjoch around 11 a.m., from where the mountain guide wanted to descend south via a steep gully to Vent in the Ötztal.

Roll over several times during a crash
During the descent through this gully – according to witness statements – the binding of one of the mountain guide’s skis suddenly opened. The man lost the ski and fell. He then fell about 150 to 200 meters into the canal and rolled over several times. Only when he was gone did he stop lying down.

A witness to the crash started the rescue chain. The 65-year-old was rescued by an emergency helicopter and flown to Zams Hospital. From there he was then transferred to the clinic in Innsbruck.

Companion also rescued by helicopter
The three ski tourers in his group were rescued by the police helicopter and flown unharmed into the valley to Vent.
