Child kidnapped – Twelve years in prison for airport hostage taker

Date:

The Hamburg airport hostage-taker was sentenced to twelve years in prison on Tuesday. On the evening of November 4, the chairman spoke of a “crazy act”. At the time, the man kidnapped his daughter and threw firebombs at Hamburg airport (see video above).

The four-year-old lives with her mother in Stade, Lower Saxony. On November 4, 2023, the suspect kidnapped her from the apartment and drove her car to the airport at high speed. Near the terminal, he broke through three barriers with the rental car and made his way to the airport platform.

There he threw two incendiary bombs from the car, after which two columns of fire shot up in mid-flight. Video recordings were used as evidence in the trial on Tuesday. The suspect fired a gun into the air three times, once directly next to a Turkish Airlines plane that had recently landed and the crew was still on board.

Threatened to blow up daughter
The 35-year-old demanded to be given a plane to travel to Turkey with his daughter and threatened to blow himself and the child up. “Either they have to kill us or we have to leave,” the prosecutor quoted him as saying. An alleged explosive belt later turned out to be a dummy.

Flight operations had to be halted for more than 20 hours and reportedly millions in damage were caused. The father largely confessed to the crimes and has now been found guilty of taking hostages, kidnapping minors, intentionally causing bodily harm and possession of ammunition.

Lost custody
‘Twelve years in prison for this insane act. That is our answer,” said chairman Torsten Schwarz. The convicted person has already lost custody.
