The accusation is very explosive: China will try to manipulate the upcoming elections in the United States, India and South Korea to its political advantage using AI-generated content. “With important elections taking place worldwide this year, we expect that China […] will create and distribute AI-generated content to further its interests,” says the threat analysis prepared by the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center (MTAC), which is currently causing quite a political stir.
According to the report, the American company assumes that Chinese state-funded cyber groups are targeting geopolitically important elections. Beijing is therefore mainly focusing on the elections in South Korea (Wednesday, April 10), on the Indian subcontinent (April 19 to June 1) and in the United States (November 5). The influence of AI stunts is still relatively small, but that will certainly change in the future. Or to put it another way: the red cyber danger is real.
