Residents of Graz are angry – why the church cross is still not allowed to light up

Date:

Why is this taking so long? The tower cross of the church in Graz-Gösting has not been illuminated for eight months. A resident who moved here thought the Christian symbol was ‘too bright’. He filed a lawsuit, and the city of Graz pulled the plug. The anger among the residents is now great; they have already collected 230 signatures.

True to the motto “Vurschrift is Vurschrift”, the Graz building and facilities department officials showed no mercy last year: after a single resident – he had moved to Graz-Gösting – felt disturbed by the brightness of the church cross, the electricity was quickly turned off. After a strict examination of the files, the city of Graz came to the conclusion that the “shell works” on the church had not been approved at all. The ‘Krone’ story caused outrage beyond the country’s borders. Eight months have now passed: Christmas and Easter without a cross.
