The summer temperatures caused the first swimming deaths of the year on Tuesday. An 83-year-old catfish went swimming in the Großer Schacherteich in Kremsmünster (Upper Austria) and could ultimately only be rescued dead from the still cold water.
Just a few days ago, local water rescuers warned against going into lakes and ponds in summer temperatures, because the water is still far too cold.
The man traveled alone
An 83-year-old man from Wels who drove alone to the Großer Schacherteich (one of the four ponds) near Kremsmünster probably underestimated this danger. When the man still had not come home that evening, his 80-year-old wife and an acquaintance went looking.
The two then found the missing man’s clothes on a walkway, the car was parked nearby. The two alerted the emergency services around 9:30 p.m.
Divers have found body
Ultimately, nine fire brigades searched with boats, drones and divers; they were supported by the police, who arrived on the scene with guide dogs, and the Red Cross. Around midnight it became a sad reality: divers were able to find the catfish’s body in the pond and it was recovered. An autopsy will be carried out today to determine the exact cause of death.
