A small ebb tide brought a touch of winter to our country on Wednesday evening. However, the amounts remained small: in the high valleys there was two to seven centimeters of fresh snow, even in Lech am Arlberg almost 15 centimeters!
Cool, wet and with local snowfall at higher altitudes the weather ended in many parts of the country on Wednesday. A low elevation pushed moist air from the north into the western half of Austria, and snowfall levels dropped to 500 to 300 meters during the evening.
Wet snow and thin blankets
But there is no sign of a big start to winter yet: around midnight it was all over quickly. The amount of snow remained small. The western valleys were particularly affected by sugar, and in Lower Austria and Upper Styria there was some wet snow.
Fine dust pollution reduced in Vienna
As can be seen on Thursday morning, after several days of persistent gray, the sun is returning to the country. After four cloudy days, the sky in Vienna is finally blue again. According to experts from the Severe Weather Center (uwz), the cause of this is, among other things, the westerly wind, which blows through the city at speeds of up to 40 km/h. A small plus: particulate pollution has also decreased significantly in recent days.
Despite the sunshine, maximum daytime temperatures do not exceed nine degrees.

It also becomes more friendly towards the weekend: the sun already dominates the country on Friday afternoon. In the morning, however, dense clouds will continue to move through in the north and east, causing some raindrops to the east from Salzburg and some snowflakes above 1000 meters. The minimum temperatures are minus 4 to plus 6 degrees, the daily maximum temperatures are 5 to 11 degrees.
According to meteorologists from GeoSphere Austria, the weather on Saturday will be perfect for a day outside: it will be calm and sunny. Early temperatures will range from minus 5 degrees to plus 3 degrees, daily highs from 5 to 13 degrees, although it is likely to be warmest in the west.
Rain again from Sunday
The first rainfall started on Sunday evening between Vorarlberg and the Innkreis. The sun should still shine brightly in the morning. From noon the clouds will become increasingly thicker in the west and north. Up to 12 degrees are possible in the country.
