They stick to roads, buildings or works of art or smear them. We are talking about the climate activists who are currently expressing their protest against the government’s climate policies in many countries with increasingly new actions. The behavior of members of the Last Generation and similar groups is leading to increased calls for harsher punishments. Stricter measures could soon be decided in Italy.
The Italian Council of Ministers will consider a draft law on Tuesday with severe penalties for people who soil, destroy or deface tourist attractions, government circles said. The ordinance aims to prevent acts of vandalism against works of art, such as those committed by environmentalists in recent months. The latest in a long line of incidents occurred in Rome on April 1, when a black liquid was poured into the Bernini fountain in front of the Spanish Steps.
Culture minister complains about “systematic vandalism”
Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano stressed that the attack on the fountain in Rome was “the straw that broke the camel’s back”. “We are facing systematic vandalism against our artistic and cultural heritage that has absolutely nothing to do with environmental protection. Those who damage our cultural heritage should not go unpunished, they should be severely punished,” said the minister. He is working on a regulation “asking those responsible for the damage to pay”.
Austrian politicians are also calling for stricter sentences. Even Green Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler has already criticized the actions. “Krone” environmental journalist Mark Perry recently said on the krone.tv program “Nachgefrage” that sticking yourself to the road with “semi-toxic” superglue is anything but environmentally friendly. And it wouldn’t do any good either. “It bumps into people.”
