The US government has approved the sale of urgently needed military equipment worth $138 million (about €127 million) to Ukraine. The material will be used to repair and upgrade the Hawk air defense system and will improve protection of the population and key infrastructure, the report said.
The US has already supplied Ukraine with several air defense systems, including American-made Patriot batteries and older devices such as the Hawk type. This significantly improved Ukraine’s air defenses, which at the time of the Russian invasion more than two years ago consisted largely of Soviet-era aircraft and missile systems.
The now approved sale will “not change the fundamental military balance in the region”, the International Security Cooperation Authority (DSCA) said on Tuesday (local time). However, Kiev must expand its capabilities to defend itself against Russian missile attacks, the DSCA continued.
US as main supporter
The US has been Kiev’s main military backer since the Russian invasion in February 2022. However, opposition Republicans in Congress have been blocking a new $60 billion aid package for months, under pressure from former President Donald Trump, who resigned in November wishes to stand for re-election. Without congressional approval for further aid, his country risks suffering defeat in the war against Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned last weekend.
