Footage from officers’ body cameras sheds new light on a traffic stop gone wrong: American police shot a driver 96 times.
Excitement in the United States of America! Now published videos from a March 21 police operation in Chicago’s Garfield Park neighborhood show officers shooting driver Dexter Reed as many as 96 times in 41 seconds.
An initial investigation into the operation, which got completely out of hand, showed that the 26-year-old driver first opened fire on the officers. But now the grieving family and their attorneys are starting a public discussion about why civilian officers entered the basketball fan’s car with their guns drawn and fired 96 shots at him.
Not designated as a civil servant?
The officers’ body camera footage raises more questions than it answers. According to the victim’s lawyer, it should not appear that the civilian officers had identified themselves as such before the shooting. Several authorities are re-analyzing the case and want to clarify whether the officers’ actions were justified.
