Boris Johnson considers running for primaries to replace Liz Truss

The former prime minister plans to re-lead the Conservatives for ‘national interest’, according to ‘The Times’ newspaper

Days before Liz Truss fell as Prime Minister, the British Conservative press was already looking to see who could succeed her. And among them, one name stood out: Boris Johnson. It seems inconceivable that someone who was prime minister until July and lost the support of his group could return to the front like a phoenix. But Johnson plans to present himself as leader of the party for ‘national interest’, according to ‘The Times’ newspaper.

The challenge is enormous, even for someone with the charisma of the eccentric former prime minister. Two years, in principle, from the parliamentary elections, the gap in the polls between Labor and Conservatives is almost 40 points. In addition, it remains to be seen whether Johnson, who is on vacation in the Caribbean, will agree to take back control and give up a lucrative career as a teacher around the world, his current profession.

It should be added that conservative deputies turned their backs on him in July when he was forced to resign. “A flock, when it moves, moves,” he said as he bid farewell to those who betrayed him only a few months ago. In that same speech, he also opened the door to his return. And there is data to back it up. A poll published this week found that 32% of Tory militants want Johnson to replace Truss, far ahead of any other candidate.

A possible return of Johnson in any case casts light and shadow. On the one hand, it is true that he led the Conservatives to a landslide election victory in 2019. He achieved the largest majority for the party since 1987, under Margaret Thatcher, and the largest number of votes since 1979.

Brexit culminated – although it had further tense the confrontation with the European Union, mainly as a result of the Northern Ireland Protocol – his big election promise. Thanks to the management of the pandemic and the rapid procurement of vaccines, the United Kingdom was one of the first countries to vaccinate its population. And when the war broke out in Ukraine, he was one of Kiev’s strongest supporters in Europe.

On the other hand, the scandals that eventually brought him down were one of the main factors that contributed to discredit the current “story”. Known as ‘Partygate’, Johnson’s outrages at 10 Downing Street with his associates while the rest of the country was locked up dealt a serious blow to the credibility and image of the British government. We’ll have to see if there’s a second part.
