Convicted Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny faces 30 years in prison. He announced that on Thursday. Authorities would now also charge him with promoting terrorism and extremism – while he was already in custody.
“I am a genius of the underworld,” President Vladimir Putin’s stated opponent wrote sarcastically on Twitter. He was told by his lawyers that the new allegations could lead to the sentence being increased to a total of 30 years in prison. Navalny is currently sentenced to 11.5 years in prison.
The Kremlin critic was arrested in January 2021 when he returned from Germany to his native Russia and was convicted of violating probation conditions and fraud. He was previously poisoned on a domestic Russian flight in August 2020. Russian authorities were subsequently charged with attempted murder. However, the government in Moscow has rejected this.
Navalny has condemned the war in Ukraine and accused Putin of retaining power as a motive. He also spoke out against partial mobilization. This would result in “an enormous tragedy and an enormous number of deaths”.
