A 70-year-old experienced a horror night in Weiz, Eastern Styria on Sunday: he caught a burglar red-handed in his house and a wild scuffle broke out in which the victim was injured. Nevertheless, the East Styrian man, with the help of a neighbor, managed to hold the 23-year-old burglar until the police arrived.
On Monday night, a 70-year-old from Eastern Styria and his partner (58) were woken from their sleep by noises from the living room. When the man went to investigate, he encountered a man wearing a balaclava and carrying a flashlight and a crowbar.
When he confronted the burglar, he grabbed a decorative weapon hanging on the wall and threatened the victim with it – which didn’t impress the 70-year-old as he knew the weapon was non-functional.

The resident tried to overpower the intruder and a wild scuffle ensued, during which the burglar hit the man on the head several times with the decorative weapon and pushed him against a window.
Due to the commotion, a neighbor noticed what was happening and rushed to help. The 70-year-old’s partner has now alerted the police. Although the 70-year-old was injured in the scuffle, he and his neighbor managed to detain the burglar until police arrived.
23-year-old told officials lies
But the burglar, a 23-year-old from the region, kept the police on their toes: he claimed that there were more perpetrators with firearms in the house. When this turned out to be false after a search, he claimed that the other perpetrators had fled in a car.
After further false accusations, the young man finally confessed that he was the only perpetrator. He cited financial concerns as the motive. The 23-year-old was taken to Graz-Jakomini prison.
