Ships were threatened: the US army shoots down eleven Houthi drones near Yemen

Date:

The US military says it has shot down 11 drones belonging to Yemen’s Houthi militia, which is backed by Iran. As the responsible US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Thursday on X (formerly Twitter), the drones were shot down on Wednesday morning.

The drones posed an “imminent threat” to US ships, their partners and merchant ships in the region, the report said. The Houthi militia had previously said it had attacked two Israeli ships, a US merchant ship and a US warship.

The Shiite Houthi rebels have been attacking ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since November to show solidarity with the Palestinians in the war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The Houthis see themselves as part of the ‘Axis of Resistance’, aimed against Israel and supported by Iran, which also includes Hamas and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. The US and Britain responded with attacks on Houthi positions in Yemen and want to prevent further attacks on cargo ships.

In addition, warships from two international coalitions are trying to secure shipping traffic along the Yemeni coast.
