“Acute” situation in the north: every third child in the Gaza Strip is malnourished

Date:

After the Hamas terror attacks in Israel last October and the war in Gaza, people are in the midst of a humanitarian catastrophe. The supply situation is dramatic. There is a lack of clean water and food, medical products and medicines. Nearly one in three children in the north of the Gaza Strip is acutely malnourished.

The ongoing war in Gaza has led to a worrying situation in Gaza: “Almost one in three children in the north of the Gaza Strip is acutely malnourished. The lack of important nutrients has a devastating impact on mental and physical development, especially for children,” warns Diakonie director Maria Katharina Moser.

Aid deliveries piled up behind the border crossing
According to Israeli authorities, the contents of about 600 trucks carrying aid have piled up in the Gaza Strip over the past week. In recent days, the amount of aid delivered to the closed coastal strip through the Kerem Shalom and Nitzana border crossings has increased significantly.

However, the collection and distribution of aid by the UN agencies progressed slowly, leaving Israel unable to provide further assistance.

James McGoldrick, UN humanitarian coordinator in Jerusalem, told US broadcaster CNN that there were numerous logistical complications and would take time to resolve. In addition, Israeli-imposed restrictions on freedom of movement within the Gaza Strip complicated matters.

Trucks stopped
Although many trucks arrive from Israel, these trucks cannot automatically enter the Gaza Strip. Cargoes would first have to be unloaded and sorted by, for example, water, food and medical items. Then the trucks would be loaded again and they could drive to Gaza.
