A few days ago, eight prairie dogs moved back to their old home at the Hellbrunn Zoo. Their facility has been renovated in recent weeks and is now ready to be excavated again by the animal builders.
Since the beginning of this week, the eight black-tailed prairie dogs of the Salzburg Zoo have returned to their original enclosure. The home of the tunnel and cave construction experts has been completely renovated in recent weeks.
As part of the renovation, the little rodents were not only given a new home, but also a starter cave made of concrete with two pipes, from which they can create their own home underground. The Salzburg prairie dogs didn’t need to be told twice. The carefully piled piles of earth clearly show how seriously they take this task.
Animals design their own houses
“The work is now about to begin in earnest with the eight busy zoo residents back on site and on display again. After the construction crew submitted their ideas, they are now designing their house according to their own ideas,” says director Sabine Grebner.
In March, the zoo’s own construction crew completely removed the substrate from the facility, stabilized the surface with a new membrane and grid, then backfilled and restructured.
