A day after the fatal knife attack at a Sydney shopping centre, there are now more details about the attacker. The 40-year-old did not appear to have had an ideological or other specific motive, said Anthony Cooke of New South Wales police.
“It seems clear to us at this point that it has to do with his mental health,” he said on Sunday morning (local time). The police officer did not elaborate further. The man was known to authorities before Saturday’s crime, but not for serious crimes.
Family speaking
His family has now been spoken to. The perpetrator moved to New South Wales from Queensland state in March and used a small storage unit that had already been searched.
As reported, the attacker stabbed several people in a busy Sydney shopping center on Saturday afternoon (see video above). Five died at the scene and a sixth victim died in hospital from his injuries. Other injured people are still being treated there, including a several-month-old baby whose mother has died.
Eyewitness: We hid in the store
An eyewitness said she hid in a store with 20 other people as others ran out of the mall. She saw a baby with stab wounds being taken to an ambulance. “The mother was panicking, she was sad. She held the baby and comforted him.” Two other eyewitnesses said they heard gunshots. In fact, a policewoman shot the knife attacker.
