USA: Police officer saves driver after tornado

Date:

A police officer from Slidell, Louisiana, drove his car into the middle of a tornado. When Officer Rodney West got out of his car after the violence ended, chaos surrounded him. A driver was trapped in her overturned car.

Last Wednesday, a powerful tornado ripped through the city of Slidell, causing “catastrophic” damage to the area, according to authorities. Video footage of the incident shows destroyed homes, broken windows, scattered debris and downed power lines.

Officer: “My car was shaking.”
Wind gusts of nearly 120 mph shook the car of police officer Rodney West, who was surprised by the natural occurrence. “There was no visibility and it was raining, my car was shaking.” When the officer then got out of his car, there was pure chaos around him. The officer and former soldier compared the aftermath of the tornado to “Baghdad in 2004” with American media.

The fire brigade had to free the driver
The police officer checked adjacent buildings and vehicles for injuries. He found an overturned car, the driver trapped in her car. “When someone is in a situation like this, it’s about making them understand that everything is going to be OK,” West said after the mission. He stayed with her until firefighters arrived and were able to free her from the car.
