German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach wants to reduce the number of cardiovascular diseases in the country. He also plans vouchers for preventive examinations, with which, for example, blood values can be determined.
“We want to use a voucher system to ask everyone throughout Germany for children and young people, 25-year-olds, 35-year-olds and 50-year-olds to have their values measured: blood pressure, including the risk factor of diabetes,” said the German Minister of Public Health Sunday in “Bild am Sonntag.”
The vouchers would later be processed via the electronic patient file. If the values are abnormal, people can start treatment through their GP.
Cardiovascular disease “preventable”
Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death in our neighboring country. According to Lauterbach, almost 90 percent of cases of illness could be avoided. There are now very effective and inexpensive medications such as statins that can significantly lower cholesterol levels. The sooner treatment is started, the better. If a family has a burden, it must start with children.
Costs for quitting smoking
The Minister of Health also plans to expand the offer to help smokers quit. The doctors should receive compensation for this. “(..) Then it could be something, then we get people moving.”
