About 55 people, mostly students, are said to have come into contact with toxic fumes after a chemistry experiment at a new secondary school. Three of them were taken to a hospital.
According to the Red Cross, three people were transported to hospital on Tuesday after a chemistry experiment at the New Middle School in Payerbach (Neunkirchen district).
Nausea and dry cough
The incident took place during lunch. The injured are two girls and a boy. All other children present were subjected to a health check and then handed over to their parents.
As the “NÖN” (“Niederösterreichische Nachrichten”) reported online, a routine experiment was probably conducted at school. As a result, the concentration of vapors would have reached or exceeded a critical level, says Zenker of the Red Cross. The new secondary school and the adjacent primary school were evacuated as a precaution, Mayor Jochen Bous emphasized in an interview with ORF Lower Austria.
About 55 people came into contact with the fumes in the classroom. There were complaints of nausea and irritation of the respiratory tract. The Red Cross was deployed with nine vehicles. There were also three emergency physicians on site.
