A 700-gram object that fell from space onto a Florida home in early March came from the International Space Station, NASA confirmed Monday.
According to the US space agency, the object is a fragment of a cargo pallet containing old batteries – waste that was dropped from the ISS in 2021. It should have entered the atmosphere “safely” and crashed into the sea.
On March 8, a resident of Naples, Florida found a gray object that he believed had fallen through the roof and two floors of his home. The resident notified NASA of the incident.
She said she is investigating why the 700-gram object was not completely destroyed in the atmosphere and whether practices need to be changed.
