Serious traffic accident on Sunday night in the Plabutschtunnel: A 30-year-old driver left the road and hit the wall of a breakdown lane without braking. The man was trapped in the wreckage; he and his passenger (24) were seriously injured.
At about 2.30 am, the 30-year-old was driving north with no fixed address in the Plabutsch tunnel with a 24-year-old woman from Graz in the passenger seat. What exactly happened next is another question for the police. The car suddenly went off the road and crashed into a tunnel bay bulkhead.
First responders rushed to treat the seriously injured and used a fire extinguisher to fight the smoke billowing from the wreckage. The driver was trapped in the car involved in the accident. The injured were taken to the LKH or UKH Graz by the rescue service.
It is not yet clear whether the driver was drunk or under the influence of drugs, police said. Still waiting for the blood test results. The Plabutsch tunnel was closed in both directions for approximately 30 minutes, with the affected eastern tube reopening at 4 a.m.
