A 40-year-old attacked and injured his neighbor with a hammer in Vienna-Floridsdorf on Thursday morning. The attacker was taken to a hospital, but was able to leave. A motive was not initially clear.
However, the 40-year-old is known to police for drug-related crimes, which revealed he attacked his neighbor while under the influence of drugs. The incident took place around 10:45 am when the attacker rang the doorbell at his neighbor’s apartment. He opened the door, whereupon the 40-year-old put his foot in the crack of the door and gained access. He then attacked the 33-year-old victim and punched the man several times. He was hit in the head and upper body with a hammer.
The victim was able to escape
The 33-year-old managed to escape from his apartment and alerted the police. Meanwhile, the neighbor returned to his own apartment and smashed furniture such as vases. In doing so he also destroyed the hammer. The Vienna Emergency Service (WEGA) responded and repeatedly asked the man to come out of his apartment. When he didn’t comply, she forced her way in and arrested the man. An entry and approach ban and a temporary weapons ban were issued against him.
The 40-year-old was still in custody as of late afternoon. Those involved had not yet been interviewed. The perpetrator is known to the authorities in connection with drug-related crimes.
