U-turn in Ukraine policy? Two days before a planned vote in the US House of Representatives on an aid package for Ukraine, former President Donald Trump called on Europe to provide more money to support the country attacked by Russia.
“We all agree that Ukraine’s survival and strength should be far more important to Europe than to us, but it is important to us too,” Trump wrote on his online platform Truth Social on Thursday.
Compared to the recent past, these are much milder words when it comes to Ukraine. So far, the presidential candidate has said he would end the war within hours of taking office – to Ukraine’s detriment. He regularly denounced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a greedy businessman.
Trump gives a wrong image of aid
“How is it that the United States is putting more than $100 billion more into the war in Ukraine than Europe, and there is an ocean between us that wrongly divides us!” Europe – especially the EU – has currently released significantly more money than the US.
Although Trump is no longer in power, the former president exerts strong control over many Republicans in Washington who have postponed new military aid to Ukraine. They insist on prioritizing the fight against illegal immigration at the border with Mexico.
Ukraine is struggling with a stalemate
The standoff between Democrats and Republicans has left Ukraine lacking ammunition and defense systems to defend itself against the Russian invasion.
On Saturday, the House of Representatives will vote on new military aid. Billions of dollars are earmarked for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. US President Joe Biden has called on Congress to approve the aid and announced he would sign the bill quickly.
