A TU-22M3 strategic bomber crashed early Friday in the Stavropol region of southern Russia, the Russian Defense Ministry said. The cause of this is still unclear. The ministry said the four pilots ejected from the plane.
“A TU-22M3 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces crashed while returning from a combat mission to its base in the Stavropol region. The pilots ejected using the ejection seat,” the ministry said. Three of the pilots were rescued and the search for the fourth continues.
The cause is probably a technical fault
The plane was apparently involved in attacks on Ukraine last night. Officials said the crash appears to have been caused by a technical problem. It was said that the plane had no ammunition on board.
However, there is speculation in Russian Telegram groups that the bomber was mistaken for a Ukrainian drone and therefore shot down. According to Ukrainska Pravda, the Ukrainian Air Force could neither confirm nor deny the information. They said they were checking the information.
