The baby milk crisis in the US continues. After aid deliveries from Germany and Switzerland, much-needed baby food will be flown from Great Britain and Australia in the coming days. Over the weekend, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko also expressed his willingness to help.
“We have high-quality milk and meat products for children. We are able to help them. We could start delivering tomorrow,” the head of state, whose country is heavily sanctioned by the West – not least for its proximity to the Kremlin and support for the war of aggression against Ukraine – told journalists on Friday. admitted that it wouldn’t be humanitarian aid: “I don’t think Americans are poor, they can afford it.”
Important baby milk factory has resumed production
Washington is more than unlikely to accept Minsk’s aid offer, especially as the US situation now appears to be easing. Abbott Nutrition’s strategically important plant in Sturgis, Michigan, reopened on Saturday. The first products should be delivered in just over two weeks. “We will ramp up production as soon as possible while meeting all requirements,” the group said.
The closure of the Abbott plant had exacerbated the months-long shortage of baby milk powder in the United States, originally caused by supply chain problems and the loss of workers due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company controls about 40 percent of the US baby milk powder market.
The Sturgis factory closed in February after the death of two babies. The suspicion that the deaths were due to contaminated baby milk was not substantiated. However, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered significant hygiene deficiencies in its investigation of the Abbott plant. FDA chief Robert Califf called the inspection’s findings “shocking.”
