The city of Milan will ban the sale of takeaway drinks or food from midnight. Well-known entertainment areas between May 17 and November 4 are affected. With the ban, the municipality wants to prevent local visitors from disturbing their night’s sleep.
Under the new rule, restaurants with outdoor tables must close by 12:30 p.m., and opening hours will be extended until 1:30 a.m. on weekends and public holidays. Sales riots in the streets must stop no later than 8 p.m. This is to avoid crowds at night.
“Crazy: the mayor of Milan declares war on ice cream,” was the headline in the daily newspaper “Il Giornale”. The new rules will apply, among other things, in the well-known local district of Navigli, one of the city’s most famous promenades, where many young people gather in the evenings in front of bars and pubs. The district is also home to flea markets, summer concerts, original shops and artist studios.
Criticism from entrepreneurs
The planned measures, which are to apply from May 17, are causing protests, especially among entrepreneurs. They fear losses and argue that the previous closures would not contribute to night-time peace.
