For seats and wheels – More space in trains between Munich and Salzburg

Date:

Passengers should have better chances of finding seats on the regional trains from Munich via Rosenheim to Salzburg and Kufstein from 2028.

Railway companies applying to operate the lines in Upper Bavaria would have to provide more seats outside peak hours on weekdays and at weekends “and in some cases also more space for taking bicycles than before,” according to the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG). ) Announced on Friday.

No additional connections
The reason is the high demand on the routes, said Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU). BEG management spokesman Thomas Prechtl said the number of passengers on regional trains “increased significantly at certain times”. With more space, the BEG wants to be prepared “for the continuation of the Deutschland ticket and the current development of the population in the region”. According to the information, no additional connections are planned.

Trains of the Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB), which belongs to the French Transdev group, currently run there. In the most recent punctuality statistics, the BEG stated that the railway company had the second lowest punctuality in regional transport in Bavaria on the line bundle now tendered after the “Alex Nord”. In 2023, only about three-quarters of all trains were still running on schedule. The main cause was low speeds and exceeding stopping times.

Decision before the end of the year
According to the BEG, rail companies can submit an application to operate on the line network until October 21. The BEG is expected to make a decision by the end of 2024. As a state-owned company, it plans, finances and controls regional and S-Bahn transport in Bavaria on behalf of the Ministry of Transport.
