At the end of the meeting of foreign ministers in Capri Kiev, the G7 countries promised more help against Russian air strikes. Germany and NATO in particular are putting pressure on this. No concrete new commitments have yet been made on the Italian island in the Mediterranean.
“We are particularly committed to strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities to save lives and protect critical infrastructure,” the adopted statement said.
G-7: Putin must withdraw
At the same time, the Group of Seven called on Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to immediately end his war of aggression against the neighboring country after more than two years. Russia must withdraw all its forces “immediately, completely and unconditionally.”
The statement literally reads: “Russia can end this war today.” The G7 consists of the US, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, France, Italy and Germany. Italy is chairman this year.
Berlin supplies third Patriot system
During the meeting, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) strongly urged that Ukraine be supplied with additional air defense systems. The calls were directed against the United States, but also against France and Italy. Germany is currently preparing to introduce a third Patriot system. The annual G7 summit of heads of state and government will take place in the southern Italian region of Apulia in mid-June.
